Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet impresses in Latvia winning 5km gold

Kenya’s world cross country champion Beatrice Chebet and compatriot Lilian Kassait have dominated in a 5-kilometre race of the first-ever World Road Running Championship.

The event in Riga, Latvia saw Chebet and Kassit finish in the first and second position clocking,14:35 and 14:39 respectively.

Chebet has had a good season this year, starting with a stellar performance In the World Cross-country Championships, not forgetting winning the Kip Keino Classic and the Diamond League.

The 2022 World Athletics Championship 5000 meters Silver medalist says that she still has one more assignment she needs to conquer which is defending her World cross-country title at the Belgrade met in March 2024.

The fiercely competitive race commenced with Chebet and Kasait leading the way as they breezed past the 350m mark.

They set a blistering pace, covering the first kilometre in just 2 minutes and 55 seconds, with Chebet appearing remarkably at ease while holding second place behind Taye.

Yet another Ethiopian, Medina Eisa, was also part of the front-running pack, determined to challenge the Kenyan pair and make a strong bid for victory.

Men’s 5km race

Meanwhile, in the men’s race, it was the opposite as a Kenyan finished third in the race.

Common Wealth games 5000 meters silver medalist Nicholas Kimeli was outshined by an Ethiopian duo of Hagos Gebrhiwet and Yomif Kejelcha.

Kimeli recorded at time of 13:16 , coming behind Kejelcha 14 seconds later, with Gebrhiwet carrying the day in 12:59.

Cornelius Kemboi another Kenyan in the race finished 5th in 13:24.
