Kenya officially began its Olympics campaign on Monday, securing three medals—one gold, one silver, and one bronze—in a drama-filled day.
The drama started when Amos Serem was nearly denied a chance in the 3000m steeplechase final after being pushed during the race.
Serem claimed he was shoved by a competitor while approaching the water barrier in the last lap of Heat 1 on Monday evening. After appealing, he will now join his compatriots, World Championships bronze medalist Abraham Kibiwott and Simon Kiprop, in the finals set for tomorrow, Wednesday, August 7, 2024.
The drama continued with Faith Kipyegon in the 5000 meters final. Kipyegon was initially disqualified, with her silver medal taken away and given to the Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan, after a collision with Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay.
However, after a successful appeal, Kipyegon’s silver medal was reinstated. Beatrice Chebet won gold in the same race, raising Kenya’s medal tally to two.
Later that night, Mary Moraa secured Kenya’s third medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, taking third place in the women’s 800 meters final.
As of Monday, August 5, 2024, Kenya is in position 31 in the medal standings with three medals.
Medal Standings:
- 1 Gold – Beatrice Chebet (5000m)
- 1 Silver – Faith Kipyegon (5000m)
