Organizers of the London Marathon have confirmed that Kenya’s Alexander Mutiso and Peres Jepchirchir will return to the English capital on Sunday, April 27, 2025, to compete in this year’s edition. Both athletes are set to seek dominance in the 42-kilometer race against a field of formidable competitors.
Jepchirchir’s Legacy and Rivalry
In the 2024 edition, Peres Jepchirchir delivered a stunning performance, winning the women’s category in a world-record time of 2:16:16. The triumph marked her third victory in a World Marathon Majors race, ahead of Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa and Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei, the 2021 London winner.
Jepchirchir now faces a formidable challenge as she renews her rivalry with Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands, who finished 15th at the Paris Olympics, and other elite competitors.
Mutiso’s Growth and Challenges
Alexander Mutiso, who won the men’s race in his debut last year with a time of 2:04:01, has faced a mixed journey in his marathon career. At the Paris Olympics, his only marathon since London, Mutiso placed 21st, finishing in 2:10:31. His most recent performance at the Bangsaen21 Half Marathon in Thailand saw him secure second place with a time of 1:02:34.
The 28-year-old will meet stiff competition, including Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia, a fierce rival from the Paris Olympics.
High-Stakes Rivalry in London
This year’s race will reignite rivalries from the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Jepchirchir finished 15th in the women’s marathon with a time of 2:26:51, and Mutiso placed 21st in the men’s event.
Both athletes will aim to assert Kenya’s dominance on the global marathon stage once again while battling world-class competitors.
