Kenya’s U20 national football team, the Rising Stars, has secured a spot in the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a commanding 4-0 victory over Burundi in the semi-finals of the U20 AFCON CECAFA Qualifiers.
On Friday, October 18, 2024, the Rising Stars made history by qualifying for the U20 AFCON for the first time in their history. Despite controlling the first half, neither side could break the deadlock, leaving the teams tied at 0-0 at halftime.
The second half saw a revitalised Kenya, starting with Lawrence Okoth, who opened the scoring in the 52nd minute. This set the stage for a dominating performance.
Hassan Beja added the second goal in the 66th minute with a clinical finish, and Aldrine Kibet quickly followed with a third goal just three minutes later. In stoppage time, Louise Ingavi sealed the comprehensive victory with a goal in the 90+4 minute, ensuring Kenya’s spot in the U20 AFCON finals.
Kenya now advances to the final, where they will face Tanzania on Sunday, October 20, 2024. The two sides previously met in the group stage, where Kenya secured a 2-1 win. Both teams have already qualified for the 2025 U20 AFCON as representatives of the CECAFA region, but the final will determine the regional champion in what promises to be an exciting clash.
Kenya has enjoyed an unbeaten run throughout the tournament, with four wins and one draw, boasting 14 goals scored and only one conceded. This qualification marks a significant milestone in the nation’s youth football development and provides the Rising Stars with the opportunity to compete on the continental stage against Africa’s best.
