Kenya’s Shujaa announce Squad for Vancouver 7s with two key changes

Kenya’s national men’s rugby sevens head coach, Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua, has unveiled the squad for the fourth round of the 2025 HSBC Sevens World Series, set to take place in Vancouver, Canada, from February 21 to 23, 2025.

Squad Updates: Kubu and Siketi In, Salem and Shiasi Out

The Shujaa squad sees two changes, with Fijian-born Jone Kubu from Kabras RFC receiving his first call-up alongside his club teammate, Jackson Siketi, who is also set to make his debut.

Co-captains George Ooro and Samuel Asati will lead the team, while Benson Salem (Nondies RFC) and Festus Shiasi (KCB Rugby) miss out on this leg.

Shujaa Squad for Vancouver Sevens:

Forwards: Kevin Wekesa, George Ooro (CC), William Mwanji, Vincent Onyala, Denis Abukuse
Backs: Samuel Asati (CC), Nygel Amaitsa, Antony Omondi, Patrick Odongo, Floyd Wabwire, Brian Tanga
New Call-ups: Jone Kubu, Jackson Siketi

Current Standings and Vancouver Challenges

Shujaa is aiming for a strong showing in Vancouver after finishing 10th in the previous round at the Perth Sevens, where they narrowly lost 19-12 to New Zealand in the ninth-place final.

Currently, Kenya sits ninth in the overall 2025 HSBC Sevens Series standings with 14 points after three rounds.

Vancouver Sevens Pool Draw:

  • Pool A: Kenya (Shujaa), Argentina, France, Great Britain
  • Pool B: Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Ireland
  • Pool C: Spain, Fiji (current league leaders), Uruguay, USA

With Argentina and France posing a tough challenge and Great Britain looking to bounce back, Shujaa will need a solid performance to improve their standings.

Looking Ahead

Coach Kevin Wambua will be hoping that the inclusion of Kubu and Siketi injects fresh energy into the squad as Shujaa pushes for a higher finish in Vancouver.

With a mix of experienced players and new talents, the team will be eager to make an impact on the global stage and climb the HSBC Sevens rankings.
