Musa Juma Mumbo, fondly referred to as “MJ,” was born on December 6, 1968, in Siaya County, Kenya. Raised in a family deeply rooted in musical traditions, Musa Juma was exposed to music from a young age.

Musa Juma’s repertoire includes timeless hits such as Siaya Kababa, Oyoo Daktari, Marcelina, Hera Mudho, Ufisadi, Lake Victoria, Ratego Baba, Christina, Bi Butaa, and Osiepe.

Musa Juma started his music career as a guitarist while still a teenager

Musa Juma’s journey into the world of music began when he picked up his first guitar as a teenager. Inspired by the rhythms of Benga and the melodies of Rhumba, he dedicated himself to mastering the instrument and crafting his unique sound.

In the early 1990s, Musa Juma formed the Limpopo International Band, which would later become one of the most iconic musical groups in Kenya.

Known for his exceptional guitar skills and soulful vocals, Musa Juma quickly gained recognition as a trailblazer in the Benga and Rhumba music genres.

Musa Juma’s musical prowess was recognized with several prestigious awards and accolades, including multiple Kisima Awards and the Golden Award for Benga Music.

He also collaborated with renowned artists both within Kenya and internationally, further solidifying his status as a music icon.

MJ Passes on in Mombasa upon his Return from USA

In the midst of his flourishing career, tragedy struck when Musa Juma fell ill with pneumonia. Despite his illness, he remained committed to his passion for music, continuing to perform for his fans with unwavering dedication.

However, his health began to deteriorate rapidly. This was largely attributed to the impact of winter during his tour of the United States.

In his final interview with the Standard, Musa Juma revealed that he experienced acute chest pains and pneumonic attacks. Sadly, on March 15, 2011, Musa Juma passed away at the Mombasa Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
