Kenyatta University has appealed to well-wishers for financial assistance to help clear medical bills for accident survivors and burial expenses for 11 students who perished in the Maungu accident in Voi.
This comes after a tragic accident on Monday March 18, 2024 that led to the death of 11 students, and several survivors who are still undergoing treatment at various hospitals in Nairobi.
In a notice, the university administration explained the need for Kenyans and other well wishers to help in raising funds to help affected families.
The contributions can be sent to the university’s bank account.
The tragic accident occurred in Voi, Taita Taveta County, along the busy Nairobi- Mombasa highway, when the university bus collided with a truck. The bus was ferrying Kenyatta University students to Mombasa for an academic trip.
This comes a few days after the university’s deputy vice chancellor for academics on March 19, announced the suspension of all classes in the institution to allow time for mourning students who perished in the tragic road accident.
In a memo, the deputy VC noted that the three days break would give ample time for the students and the entire KU fraternity to mourn the students who died in the accident.
“Following this unprecedented tragedy, the University Management has decided to suspend all classes for three (3) days beginning Wednesday 20th March 2024 to enable us mourn our beloved students,” read part of the memo.
Meanwhile, Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul Wainaina visited the accident survivors on March 19, 2024 at the Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi.
“On behalf of the University Council and the University Management Board, I wish to convey our deepest heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have lost loved ones in this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all,” said Prof. Wainaina.
