Coffee farmers in Kenyenya, Kisii County, have received a major boost in skills and knowledge following a successful coffee education and capacity building forum held in Wednesday, March 26.
The event brought together leaders and farmers from the region, as well as agricultural experts, to discuss best practices in coffee farming, processing and marketing.
Experts emphasized the need for quality control, value addition and sustainable farming methods to enhance productivity.
Bokimonge Ward MCA Amos Onderi pledged to put the knowledge they have acquired during the eye-opening forum to work when they return to the assembly. This, Onderi says, will include exploring different ways of securing additional resources to support coffee farming.
“I want to thank [Governor Simba Arati] because in this financial year, he has helped my ward construct 57km of roads which help farmers transport their coffee,” Onderi said.
He added that accessing certified seeds is a challenge that must be discussed in the assembly, to find ways of boosting farmers.
Magenche Ward MCA Timothy Ogugu lamented that many coffee factories in the region are non-functional because of stalled machinery.
Kenyenya Deputy County Commissioner William Kipngetich Bett, who also attended the forum, lauded the national and county governments for ensuring relative peace and stability in the region, something that has helped farmers in their endevour.
He urged residents to maintain peace, emphasizing its importance for the county’s wellbeing.
