Kerry Washington, a Hollywood actress recently spoke candidly about her life-changing journey to Uganda.
Moreover, she said that she found a profound sense of acceptance and belonging.
Travelling to Uganda
Highlighting her treks through the Ruwenzori mountains as some of the most unforgettable moments of her life.
“In America, we all go to Africa with questions in our minds: ‘Do I feel at home? Do I belong here? What is my connection to this place?'” she remarked.
“But I had to set aside all those doubts because my focus was on becoming a Ugandan woman. I
genuinely felt at home there and was incredibly fortunate to be fully immersed in the rich culture. I wasn’t a mere tourist.”

Kerry Washington went on to share her remarkable experience with Ugandan gorillas.
Emphasizing how it led her to discover remarkable parallels between humans and these primates.

“While trekking in the Ruwenzori mountains, along the border between Uganda and Rwanda, the only place where wild gorillas reside, I had the incredible opportunity to join a gorilla tracker and encounter these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat,” she recounted.
“People from all corners of the globe come for this experience, and it turned out to be one of the most spiritually profound moments I’ve ever had.”
Humans share DNA with gorillas
The Emmy-nominated actress expressed her astonishment at the fact that humans share “98% of their DNA” with gorillas.
Leading her to ponder, “You start to think, ‘Oh, they’re so much like us,’ but in reality, it’s more like, ‘No, we are so much like gorillas!'”
In her memoir, she opens up about deep family secrets and personal struggles.
Including her journey to confront insecurities and embrace being her authentic self rather than conforming to others’ expectations.
