A middle-aged man tragically ended the lives of both himself and his 66-year-old mother on Tuesday at their residence in Githunguri, Kiambu County, following a heated domestic dispute.
Simon Kimani, 40, is said to have forcefully pushed his mother, Mercy Maingi, into a well before subsequently taking his own life by leaping into the same well.
According to sources within the family, the conflict between Kimani and his mother stemmed from a significant disagreement regarding the beliefs and practices of a religious group he had become involved with.
This contentious religious group advocated for practices such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and polygamous marriages, both of which his mother vehemently opposed and had previously cautioned her son against.
“What I understand from the locals is that he recently joined a cult-like religion and eventually married two wives. The mother was opposed to that and they had a fallout,” Ikinu location chief Peter Kariuki is quoted by the Nation.

“We wait for the post-mortem to authoritatively say what really happened,” Ikinu OCS Kamenya Mwita said.
