The Kikuyu Council of Elders has applauded a recent High Court ruling that declared popular traditional brew Muratina not an illicit drink.
The elders from Ndeiya Sub-County, Kiambu County, termed Justice Abigail Mshila’s on muratina as a Landmark ruling.
While declaring muratina legal, Justice Mshila said the Agikuyu people were free to prepare and consume the brew as part of their culture.
Justice Mshila ruled that muratina as part of the Agikuyu culture was not outlawed by any law, because the Alcohol and Beverages Control Act 2010 only regulates alcoholic beverages including traditional brews.
The elders say that treating muratina as illicit brew was a violation of their constitutional rights. They promised to take responsibilities to ensure they regulate the use of muratina.
The elders were speaking in Ndeiya after hosting a Kikuyu ceremony.
