Kilifi Women Representative Getrude Mbeyu has joined residents of Uyombo area in Kilifi North Sub-County in opposing a proposed nuclear plant project in the area.
Her sentiments come in the wake of a dispute between locals and the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) on the project site where locals said that the plant will negatively affect their health and livelihoods.
Mbeyu added that in the rejected Finance Bill 2024, the project had been allocated KSh2 billion which would have been used to set up infrastructure for the project.
Last month, thousands of residents held demonstrations in the remote village that led to police officers being deployed to maintain order and as a result, several people sustained injuries from clashing with the police.
Residents led by Samir Nyundo and Anthony Kingi claimed that some local leaders were behind the project and that only Kilifi Senator Steward Madzayo and Mrs Mbeyu have joined them in opposing the project that they claim will also lead to mass displacement of people.
