Kindiki defends his 21-month tenure as Interior CS

Interior cabinet secretary nominee Kithure Kindiki on Thursday August 1, 2024 defended his 21-month tenure, stating that he oversaw restoration of police air wing, pay rise for officers and operationalization of National Police Service leadership academy.

Kindiki made the remarks when he appeared before the National Assembly committee on appointments for vetting.

“I believe that I am suitable for re-appointment because within the 21 months I have been in office have ensured the country is safe from terror and reduction of crime,” said Kindiki.

In addition, he defended the rise in his net worth from Ksh544m to Ksh694m in two years, claiming he has never done business with the government.

When asked about police brutality and abductions during the recent anti-Finance Bill protests in the country, Kindiki noted that it was the work of IPOA and other relevant authorities to investigate the matter.

“Police tried their best to protect the country during the anti-Finance Bill protests. If any officer went against the law and operated with excess force, I submit it’s the work of IPOA and other organs to ensure justice is served,” Kindiki stated.

In addition, the Interior CS nominee recommended prosecution of police officers who were in Kilifi County during Shakahola massacre.

He also pointed out gaps in NGAO and nyumba kumi structures as the main reason for the Kware dumpsite murders.

During the vetting process, MPs asked Kindiki about the steps he will take to ensure the people of Kenya enjoy their picketing rights.

However, Kindiki disclosed that he didn’t talk often during the recent protests in different parts of the country because the events were operational and that the Police operate under command from the Inspector General.

Kindiki was the first CS nominee to appear before the committee for vetting, followed by Dr Debra Mulongo Barasa (CS nominee for health).

Other nominees set to appear before the committee for vetting on Thursday include Alice Wahome (Lands), Julius Ogamba (Education) and Defence CS nominee Soipan Tuya.
