Four people died on the spot while several others were seriously injured on Saturday March 23, 2024, after a matatu they were travelling in was involved in an accident at Koroma area along the Ngaru-Gatuto road in Kirinyaga County.
The accident was confirmed by the police who noted that the 14-seater matatu was involved in the accident after the driver lost control.
According to the police, the 14-seater passenger service vehicle (PSV), popularly known as matatu was moving towards Kagio from Kerugoya when the accident occurred.
Survivors of the accident reported that the matatu rolled over when the driver tried to negotiate a sharp corner at a high speed.
“As a result of the impact, four passengers died on the spot while others sustained injuries and were rushed to Kerogoya Hospital where they were left while undergoing treatment,” police said.
Meanwhile, bodies of the deceased were moved to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital mortuary.
At the same time, the matatu that was badly damaged during the accident was towed to Kerugoya police station as police continue with investigations into the cause of the accident.
The accident is one of the several road accidents that have led to loss of lives in less than one month in the country.
For instance, over 30 Kenyans have lost their lives while several others have sustained severe injuries in road accidents.
An increase in road accidents has led to Transport cabinet secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to introduce tough measures, including return of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) officers on roads to help control the situation.
The Kenyatta University accident in Voi that led to the death of 11 students is one of the latest accidents reported in the country.
As a result, angry Kenyans have been accusing traffic police officers of taking bribes, allowing unroadworthy vehicles to operate while risking lives of citizens.
