A church elder at ACK St. Luke Wang’uru Church in Kirinyaga County has been discharged from hospital after being attacked by bees at a funeral in Mwea, a week ago.
The incident occurred on December 10, 2024 when a swarm of bees attacked the 60-year-old church and mourners at a funeral in Huduma, Mwea sub county.
Speaking shortly after being discharged from Mwea Mission Hospital Karira on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, Simon Waweru said he was unconscious when he was rushed to the medical facility.
“It took me five hours to know where I was. At first, I saw my daughter crying and wondered where I was,” Waweru said.
Waweru added that he didn’t know bees could be that dangerous.
He was among the mourners who were rushed to the hospital after the incident but most of the victims were treated and discharged the same day.
During the incident, mourners including the clergy, fled the burial of Faith Murigu, a retired teacher when bees attacked them.
“We had just come from a service at our church and as we were about to begin the burial, the bees attacked us, forcing us to run for safety,” Waweru narrated.
The church elder explained that it was a rare incident, since such a thing had never been witnessed before in the area.
However, the burial ceremony still took place later in the evening after neighbours and family members lit tyres to scare the bees.
