Kirinyaga: Mother and her 9-year-old son killed by speeding car while waiting for school bus

A 32-year-old mother and her 9-year-old son on Friday September 27, 2024 in morning tragically lost their lives in a road accident along the Sagana-Karatina road in Kirinyaga County.

The mother and son were waiting for the school bus to arrive and take the boy to school when a vehicle struck them, resulting in their immediate deaths.

According to the police report, the speeding vehicle was a pickup carrying milk from Sagana to Karatina.

Moses Koskei, the police boss for Kirinyaga Sub-county, confirmed the incident, explaining that the driver of the pickup had willingly turned himself in to the authorities at Kiangwaci Police Station.

“We’ve transported the bodies of the 32-year-old woman and her 9-year-old son to Kibugi Funeral Home for further examination, and the vehicle involved has been moved to Sagana Police Station,” he shared.

After the incident, enraged locals hit the road to protest the poor road conditions.

They claimed the road builder hadn’t fulfilled the criteria for placing speed bumps in the region, despite the area having many schools.

The locals informed the press that they had requested a meeting with the Chinese contractor to clarify why he hadn’t addressed their issues.

“We insist that the contractor comes here to remove the road barriers and install speed bumps. Despite our numerous letters to him, we haven’t received any response,” expressed one of the protestors.

“Speeding vehicles are the main cause of accidents on this road, and the Chinese contractor has neglected to install speed bumps despite the necessity for children to cross the road for school,” another resident emphasized.

“This recent accident is part of a series of fatalities that stakeholders link to various factors such as the road’s poor condition and irresponsible driving,” they further highlighted.
