Residents of Mwea in Kirinyaga County have threatened to bar miraa vehicles from using the Mwea-Embu highway after one of the vehicles killed two children in the area.
The residents made the remarks on Tuesday December 3, 2024 in a heartfelt farewell, during the burial of two children who were killed by a speeding miraa vehicle.
During a funeral service held in Kirinyaga County’s Kithogondo slums, speakers vented their annoyance over a string of collisions involving vehicles transporting miraa.
Tebere MCA Peter Karinga declared, “We will only permit Miraa vehicles traveling along this highway at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour; no other person is going to be killed by a Miraa vehicle.”
Infuriated mourners voiced their worries about the traffic police department’s alleged inability to control speeding cars.
“When these Miraa vehicles are breaking traffic laws, where is the Kenyan government? In our big cities like Ngurubani, they don’t slow down or stop,” Peter Murungaru remarked.
Residents of Ngurubani town’s Kithogondo slums closed the busy Mwea-Embu highway after a miraa vehicle killed two children riding a bicycle there on November 27.
The National Police Service was urged to enforce traffic laws and take action against irresponsible drivers.
“The Miraa vehicles were chased off the Mwea-embu highway and are currently traveling at the same speed after rerouting to Kutus-Kagio-sagana road.” Njogu Phillip said.
The two children were laid to rest in a single grave at Kasarani cemetery in Thiba Ward.
