Kirinyaga Woman Rep records statement while on wheelchair

Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has recorded a statement with police following the chaos that led to her hospitalization on Tuesday, August 22.

Maina arrived at Kerugoya Police Station in a wheelchair accompanied by Senior Counsel Otiende Amollo who is also the Rarieda Member of Parliament.

Kirinyaga Members of County Assembly (MCAs) Eric Muchina (Kerugoya), David Mathenge (Baragwi), and Moses Migwi (Kanyekiini) were also present flanked by a group of Maina’s supporters who chanted songs and slogans outside the police station.

Attack by goons

Maina sustained head injuries after fracas erupted on Tuesday while she was inspecting a solar water borehole project that was vandalized the previous week by unknown people.

The legislator, leading a group of agitated locals, marched to Kerugoya Police Station to record a statement when a group of youth emerged and began throwing stones at them.

She was rushed to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital before being airlifted to Nairobi for specialized treatment.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula and a group of MPs visit Kirinyaga Woman Rep Njeri Maina at Nairobi West Hospital on Wednesday, August 23.

Governor Anne Waiguru condemned the incident and called for speedy investigations into the matter. The issue caused uproar in Parliament where certain MPs pointed fingers at the county boss.

“I saw the young MP in very bad shape on social media, having been attacked viciously by goons hired by the Governor. That is not acceptable. We demand that the Governor of Kirinyaga be summoned by the DCI so that she can record a statement, and if possible be taken to court,” Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi said on Tuesday.
