Kobala Girls, Highway Boys crowned the 2024 Europe Day Kenya Football Tournament champions

The Europe Day Kenya Football Tournament Boys and Girls finals, staged at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, culminated in song and dance for Kobala Girls from Homa Bay County and Highway High School from Nairobi as both teams were crowned champions of the 2024 edition of the competition.

Subsequently, both teams earned the coveted prize of flying to Romania in Europe and getting a chance to train with the country’s national football teams, courtesy of the European Union Embassy.

Kobala thrashed Dagoretti Mixed 4-1, while Highway High School outsmarted Ringa Boys from Homa Bay to clinch a 2-1 win in the hotly contested boys’ finals, which saw Highway take the lead just under 10 minutes into the match.

Meanwhile, Gadamoji from Marsabit County finished third, and Mkongani from Kilifi finished fourth in the Girls’ category. Kachochoroni from Kilifi finished third, while Dakabaricha from Marsabit came in fourth.

The second and third place finishers in the competition, Ringa Boys and Dagoretti Mixed in second place, and Kachochoroni and Gadamoji in third place, will get a chance to train with Kenya’s top flight league teams, AFC Leopards and FKF PL Champions Gor Mahia, as part of their reward.

The inaugural competition attracted 64 teams from four counties: Kilifi, Marsabit, Homa Bay, and Nairobi.

During the weekend of 26-27 March 2024, Marsabit County hosted the first leg of the Europe Day Kenya Football Tournament.

Eight boys’ teams and eight girls’ teams, all between 15 and 18 years old, competed for the chance to advance through the competition.

The Nairobi County preliminaries of the Europe Day Kenya Football Tournament kicked off on Saturday 11th May  at Upper Hill High School.

The Homa Bay County preliminaries of the Europe Day Kenya Football Tournament kicked off on 6th April 2024 at the Raila Odinga stadium.

The European Union Delegation to Kenya Deputy Ambassador Mr. Ondrej Simek was in Homa Bay at the start of the tournament, to encourage all the players in the tournament. The teams, made up of 8 boys teams and 8 girls teams, played with a spirit of determination and fairness which Kobala Girls won to advance.

The Kilifi County preliminaries of the Europe Day Kenya Football Tournament will kick off on 4-5 May at Malindi High School. The Kilifi County tournament is sponsored by the German Embassy in Kenya.

As with previous matches, eight boys’ teams and eight girls’ teams, all between 15 and 18 years old, will competed. 

The tournament was held as way of the European Union to celebrate Europe Day marked on May 9th with Youth in Kenya.
