The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) has announced that Olympic Silver medalist Brigid Kosgei will not be representing Kenya at the 2024 Olympics later this month in Paris, France.
According to the NOC-K, a medical assessment found Kosgei to be at risk of injury.
In a statement issued by the (NOC-K) Sharon Lokedi will join Hellen Obiri and Peres Chepchirchir in going to Paris in place of 30-year-old Kosgei.
“Upon a review by the medical team led by the Chief Medical Officer Dr Ondiege, Kosgei will not be heading to Paris for her second Olympics.
“Following the development, Sharon Lokedi, who was named to the reserve team, will now join defending Champion Peres Jepchirchir and Hellen Obiri to fly Kenya’s flag in Paris.
“The National Olympics committee would like to thank Brigid for the time she spent in training under the Team Kenya Umbrella and will continue supporting her throughout the season.”
Sharon Lokedi clinched the 2022 New York Marathon title on her debut in the World Marathon Majors race.
It is a hammer blow to Kosgei who had seemed to be on the path to peak form after her injury woes in the aftermath of the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
The 30-year-old won the Lisbon Half Marathon in March this year, clocking 1:05:51 before finishing fifth at the London Marathon, the following month.
