The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has introduced new strategies to boost efficiency and speed up operations at the Port of Mombasa.
KPA moves towards full automation
Speaking during an engagement with the Shippers Council of East Africa, KPA Managing Director William Ruto announced plans to enhance automation at the port.
He stated that the transition to full automation is already underway. KPA has begun upgrading terminal operating and application systems.
The automation process will simplify operations and reduce system downtimes. This will lead to faster approval of cargo documents and improved efficiency.
Waiver processing and equipment upgrade
As part of the initiative, KPA will also automate waiver processing. This move aims to enhance transparency and speed up port operations.
Additionally, Ruto revealed that KPA plans to invest in more equipment. The goal is to improve capacity and manage traffic flow at port facilities.
The Port of Mombasa will soon receive 10 rubber-tyred gantry cranes and 20 new terminal tractors. These will improve cargo handling and boost efficiency.
Commitment to stakeholder collaboration
During the meeting, Ruto reassured the business community of KPA’s commitment to working with stakeholders. He emphasized the need for coordination in service delivery.
“Improving port efficiency requires automation, strong stakeholder collaboration, and ongoing infrastructure investment,” Ruto stated.
“By implementing these strategies, ports can adapt to market demands, increase productivity, and remain competitive globally,” he added.
Addressing cargo congestion claims
Ruto dismissed claims that the Port of Mombasa is facing cargo congestion. He assured Kenyans that KPA is dedicated to resolving challenges and improving business operations.
The Authority remains committed to transforming port processes to make them more efficient and cost-effective.
