Prof. Olive Mugenda has resigned from her position as Chairperson of the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) board.
Her resignation has been accepted by President William Ruto.
According to a press statement released by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed on Tuesday December 3, 2024, the resignation takes effect immediately.
Additionally, it was announced that Ahmed Dagane, the hospital’s CEO, has been directed to proceed on indefinite leave.
Dr. Zainab Gura has been appointed as the Acting CEO following a decision made by the KUTRRH board during a meeting on November 28, 2024.
“The appointment will remain in effect until further notice, and appropriate allowances will be paid to the Acting Chief Executive Officer,” the board stated in a letter to Dr. Gura.
It was also noted that the Board of Directors looks forward to efficient and effective service delivery under her leadership.
Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa has made additional changes to the hospital’s leadership, revoking the appointments of board members Gladys Ogallo and Kavinya Mwendwa through a gazette notice.
These developments follow protests by KUTRRH staff on Monday, during which concerns about alleged mismanagement were raised.
A petition undersigned by members of the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) and the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) outlined ten demands purportedly made by the hospital’s medical and non-medical staff.
The staff highlighted that while complaints had been raised since the pandemic, conditions at the hospital remained unchanged.
