“The ongoing KWS operation, Ondoa Fisi, in Juja Sub County managed to capture the second hyena, marking the second capture in less than a week,” read the statement in part.

KWS has so far deployed four traps. Additionally, three mobile teams have been stationed to enhance security in the area.

“Plans are underway to translocate the captured hyena to a national park, away from settled areas,” KWS stated.

KWS had earlier elaborated instances in which lethal control of wildlife can be enforced.

“This can be applied if a staff or community member is under threat.”

According to KWS, the lethal methods include erection of wildlife barriers, mapping of hot spot areas for strategic deployments, translocation of problem animals, use of Collars, especially on endangered species for monitoring and conservation education

The residents blamed the increased Hyena attacks on the abandoned quarries and bushy chunks of land that have remained undeveloped for years.

The quarries are believed to be the Hyena’s den.

The police, however, managed to take the body after Juja Sub County police commander Phylliss Muthoni and Witeithie ward MCA Ngugi Mwibiri intervened and pleaded with the residents to let them do their job.

The body was taken for preservation at Thika General Kago mortuary.
