This easy to follow step by step guide will have you lowering your cosmetics budget and creating your own lip balm in no time. Let’s get into it.
What you’ll need;
- A Base.
For this you will use beeswax. It helps to lock in moisture, protect the lips from harsh environmental factors and gives lip balms a smooth texture. - A carrier oil.
Carrier oils for lips are used to dilute essential oils so they can be used safely on the skin, especially the sensitive skin of and around the lips. Types include coconut oil, shea butter, mango butter among many others. - Essential oils.
When choosing an essential oil for lip balm, the best choice is one that offers skin protection, hydrating properties, a pleasant aroma and is safe for lip use. Examples include peppermint, orange, lemon or lime essential oils. - Colourant.
These are optional if you’re looking for a little bit of colour or tint for your balms. You can use beetroot juice/powder. - A steel bowl and lip balm containers/tins for storage. You can get these online or in supermarkets.
Recipes
Orange Lip-Balm
For this recipe you’ll use;
● 1 tablespoon of beeswax
● 2 tablespoons of coconut oil
● 1 tablespoon of shea butter
● 2-3 drops of orange essential oil
Preparation
● Melt the beeswax, coconut oil and shea butter using the double-boiler on the stove or in the microwave.
● Once melted, take the mixture off the stove and add in your essential oil and stir well.
● Transfer the mixture into your container.
● Let it cool for half an hour and it’s ready for use!
Minty Mojito Lip Balm
For this recipe you’ll use;
● 1 tablespoon of beeswax
● 1 tablespoon of shea butter(or coconut oil)
● 1-2 drops of lime and peppermint essential oil each.
The preparation for this is similar to the orange lip balm.
