The county government of Laikipia has come up with measures to address the rising number of single parents within the county by establishing training and special enterprise funds.
Single parents will access these funds at a very low interest rate to empower the society for economic growth.
Speaking in Nanyuki town during a civic education event organized by the county government, Mr. Warren Apopo, Children’s Officer of Laikipia, said that they have identified an increased number of single parents in the county.

He further stated that there is need to equip them with modern parenting techniques to prevent exposing their children to child abuse.
Apopo added that vulnerable families from urban areas should join self-help groups to receive help on how to raise their kids, as many of them face difficulties in parenting.
His sentiments were echoed by Nancy Munene, Single Mothers’ Representative from the region, who stated that it is very difficult to raise children as a single parent.
According to them they spend most of their time caring for their children, leading to emotional breakdowns and some being sidelined from societal development projects.
