Lamu: Man handed 12-year jail term for subjecting his three daughters to FGM

A 45-year-old man from Lamu County has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for subjecting her daughters to female genital mutilation (FGM).

The court heard that the man took his three daughters aged 12, 5, and 4 to Boni Forest for the outlawed cultural practise.

Mpeketoni Senior Resident Magistrate Pascal Nabwana convicted him of the three charges of FGM and sentenced him to 4 years in each count, which will run consecutively, or a KSh600,000 fine.

The accused was charged with aiding and abetting FGM contrary to Section 20 as read with Section 29 of the Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation Act 2011.

He is reported to have committed the offences with others not before the court on diverse dates between 1st January 2023 and 20th January 2023 at Vipingoni Village, Lamu West Sub-County, Lamu County.

The prosecution, led by Prosecution Counsel Wambua Kyalo, presented six witnesses to support its case against the accused person.
