Azimio la Umoja spokesperson Prof Makau Mutua has told off political leaders who are opposing Raila Odinga’s bid for the position of chairperson for the African Union Commission.
In a statement on Sunday May 5, 2024, Mutua stated that many politicians who have been seen publicly opposing Raila’s bid are nothing but self-serving hypocrites and leeches.
“They rant and contort not because they care about him or Kenyans but because they are deathly afraid of being politically orphaned.
“Most of them can’t stand upright or call a Kamukunji without him, nor can they be elected without using his name and coattails,” read part of Mutua’s statement posted on X.
According to professor Mutua, leaders opposing Raila’s bid are at risk of dying politically or their political careers are in rigor mortis.
“Stop the nonsense and let Baba go and lead Africa at the peak of the African Union. He’s the best man for the job,” stated Mutua.
He added that no Kenyan has ever held such a hallowed international position, adding that Africa will be better if Raila gets the job.
At the same time, the law professor was optimistic that another Kenyan should come up to lead the opposition, just in case Raila gets the AUC job.
Mutua emphasized, “Let’s gift Kenya’s favorite son to the continent. Tuachane na ujinga!”
His remarks emerged after former Kiambu governor William Kabogo declared openly that he is among those opposing Raila’s bid for the AUC job.
“I am one of those who pray that Raila Odinga does not get the African Union commission job,” said Kabogo.
Meanwhile, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and his Senate counterpart Aaron Cheruiyot had urged Raila to stop criticising President William Ruto’s government.
Speaking on Saturday May 4 ,2024, in Teso North, Busia County Ichungwah and Cheruiyoy noted that it was wrong for Raila to criticise the government yet President Ruto was campaigning for him to get the AUC job.
“We are asking our friend Raila, William Ruto understands the issues of the economy better than you; he has turned the economy around. He also understands the country’s politics because he defeated you during elections when you were backed by the sitting government. He also understands world politics, that is why he is helping you to become AUC Chair,” said Ichung’wah.
The Kenya Kwanza leaders were reacting after the ODM party leader said that the government was not prepared to deal with the floods crisis in the country, resulting in the deaths of many innocent citizens.
His sentiments were echoed by Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka who stated that Raila’s bid for the AUC seat does not mean he should stop fighting for the rights of Kenyans.
