Winfred Bwire Ndubi, lovingly known as Winnie Bwire or Dida, has passed away after a brave and extended battle with cancer.
On September 5, 2024, her family shared the heart-wrenching news that Winnie succumbed to her illness while receiving treatment in Turkey.
In their statement, the family conveyed their profound grief and acceptance of God’s will.
“It is with heavy hearts and humble acceptance of God’s will that we announce Winifred Bwire Ndubi lost her battle to cancer on 5th September 2024 while undergoing treatment in Turkey,” the family’s statement reads.
They expressed their deep gratitude for the overwhelming support, prayers, and generous contributions that sustained Winnie throughout her treatment. Winnie had been in Turkey receiving specialized cancer care for several months.
Details about her funeral and memorial service will be shared by the family in due course.
Winnie Bwire, affectionately known as ‘Dida,’ was a multi-talented Coast-based actress and artist born in the 1980s. Her creative talents spanned across acting, scriptwriting, songwriting, singing, painting, and interior design.
She was also a skilled baker, an astute businesswoman, and a devoted mother.
Her acting career took off in 2014 with a debut role in the series ‘Penzi’ on Raia TV. She went on to feature in productions like ‘Kisasa’ and ‘Tehanini’ on Maisha Magic East.
Her acting skills were further showcased in ‘Kalimani Dynasty’ on KTN, but it was her role as Dida in the hit Swahili telenovela ‘Sultana’ on Citizen TV that truly captured hearts.
In ‘Sultana,’ Dida played a character deeply entangled in a love triangle. Her character’s affection for Jabali Junior (JJ) is complicated by JJ’s love for the blind protagonist, Sultana.
Dida’s portrayal was a poignant mix of confusion, tolerance, and emotional turmoil as she navigated her mother’s (Angie Magio) insistence on her marrying JJ, while also dealing with forbidden feelings for Kaka, a maid employed by JJ’s father.
In her personal life, Winnie found love with Dan Sonko, a renowned coastal actor known for “Pete.” Their relationship ended in 2023, but her spirit and resilience remained steadfast.
Winnie’s battle with Breast Cancer was a significant chapter in her life. She shared her journey openly on Instagram, revealing that she was nearing the end of her treatment and seeking support from her fans.
Her courage and openness in the face of adversity were truly inspiring. A real Cancer Warrior, who came, saw and conquered!
Rest in Peace
