Liverpool ascended to the top of the Premier League standings after securing a 2-1 triumph against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday, December 9, 2023.

The Reds mounted a comeback from a goal deficit to clinch the victory, displacing Arsenal from the top spot, thanks to goals from Mohammed Salah and Harvey Elliot.

Liverpool secured a 2-0 victory at Sheffield United on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, while Crystal Palace suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth on the same day.

The hosts outperformed their opponents and rightfully took the lead in the 57th minute through Jean-Philippe Mateta’s penalty following a foul on him in the box by Liverpool’s 20-year-old defender Jarell Quansah.

Despite Liverpool facing challenges against the Eagles, who had just experienced a single loss in their last 26 Premier League games, they managed their first shot on target in the 76th minute.

Coincidentally, this shot was deflected into the net, drawing them level a minute after Crystal Palace was reduced to ten men due to Jordan Ayew earning his second booking.

Salah’s 200th goal in his Liverpool career set the stage for a momentous conclusion to the game, with the Reds aiming for their 11th league win in 16 rounds of the 2023/24 Premier League season.

The assault on Palace’s goal led to an injury for home goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who was subsequently substituted in the 87th minute, with Remi Matthews taking his place.

With ten minutes of stoppage time added at Selhurst Park, Liverpool wasted no time in their relentless pursuit of a winner, and Harvey Elliott found the back of the net in the 90+1 minute, with Salah providing the assist.

Liverpool currently lead the league with 37 points from the first 16 matches. However, Arsenal, now in second place with 36 points, have the chance to reclaim the top spot with a win against Aston Villa later in the evening.

Crystal Palace, enduring their eighth loss of the season, sit in 16th position with 16 points, maintaining a seven-point buffer above the relegation zone.

Liverpool’s next league fixture is at home against Manchester United on Sunday, December 17, 2023, while Palace’s upcoming match is against defending champions Manchester City a day earlier.
