Uruguayan forward Darwin Nunez set a new Premier League record as Liverpool coasted to a 4-1 victory over Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.
Liverpool secured their 15th victory in 22 league matches, maintaining their lead at the summit of the Premier League table with 51 points.
They are five points ahead of both Manchester City and Arsenal, who occupy the second and third positions, respectively.
The scoring opened with a solo effort from Diogo Jota, followed by Conor Bradley’s first senior goal for Liverpool, leaving Chelsea trailing at halftime for the first time in the Premier League this season.
In Jurgen Klopp’s first league game since announcing his decision to leave at the end of the season, Dominic Szoboszlai headed in, making it three for The Reds in the second half.
Although Christopher Nkunku pulled one back for Mauricio Pochettino’s side and was unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty soon after, Luis Diaz secured the fourth goal, extinguishing any hopes of a comeback.
The outcome keeps Chelsea in the 10th position in the table, with their best chance of a successful season likely to come in the Carabao Cup final next month.
