Liverpool’s manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that centre-back Joel Matip will be out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury.
Matip is facing a prolonged spell on the sidelines after injuring his knee in Liverpool’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Fulham on 3 December.
Matip’s contract runs until the end of the 2023-24 season, but he played his way back into Klopp’s Premier League starting lineup this season thanks to Ibrahima Konate‘s injury troubles.
As a result, Klopp supposedly wants to keep Matip around and is pushing for the club to hand a contract renewal to the ex-Cameroon international, who has made 201 appearances for the club since arriving on a free transfer in 2016.
The defender will now undergo surgery before embarking on a lengthy rehabilitation programme.
Klopp and his players received the news about Matip before Wednesday’s hard-fought 2-0 victory over Sheffield United.
