A local barber in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County, was on Saturday, August 19 arrested after he allegedly killed a foreign athlete under unclear circumstances.
Confirming the incident, Keiyo North Police Commander Tom Makori says a report was made by one of the trainers in a famed athletics training camp that the athlete died after a fight ensued between him and the suspect.
The police boss adds that it is yet to be established why the two were engaging in a fight leading to the death, even as investigations begin in earnest.
Makori has, however, urged residents not to take matters into their own hands and always seek the right channels to solve issues.
The body of the athlete has been taken to Iten County Referral Hospital mortuary.
Iten is a town known to produce some of the world’s best sportsmen and sportswomen, due to its unique climate and altitude. These attributes have seen Iten attract foreign athletes who come to train to be successful like their Kenyan counterparts.
