“Lookout for floods!” – Met department issues heavy rains warning across Kenya starting today

The meteorological department has warned that heavy rains are expected in several parts of the country starting today.

In an advisory issued on Monday, April 1, the department said that several parts of Lake Basin, the Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of Rift Valley including Nairobi area will receive rainfall of more than 30mm in 24 hours on Tuesday, April 2.

“The heavy rainfall is likely to intensify to more than 40mm in 24 hours and spread to Southeast Lowlands, caost and northern sector on Wednesday, April 4. The heavy rainfall is likely to be accompanied by gusty winds,” the advisory reads in part.

The counties that will be affected are; Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Busia, Migori, Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West-Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi ,Nairobi, Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, Taita-Taveta, Mombasa, Tana-River, Kilifi, Lam, Kwale, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo.

Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential floods and flash floods.

“Residents are advised to avoid driving through, or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes. Gusty winds may blow off roofs, uproot trees and cause structural damages. Updates on the ensuing weather will be provided promptly,” the department warns.

The advisory has been addressed to; the Presidency, Cabinet Secretary: Ministry of Environment Climate Change and Forestry; Principal Secretary: State Department for Environment and Climate Change, National Intelligence Service, Kenya Red Cross, Kenya Maritime Authority, Kenya Ports Authority, Kenya Airport Authority, National Disaster Operations Centre, National Disaster Management Unit, Media, Various Government Ministries, Council of Governors, County Directors of Meteorological Services (CDMs).
