Luka Modric becomes Euro’s oldest goal scorer

Luka Modric has become the oldest goalscorer in the history of the European Championship.

In a match that ended in a 1-1 draw, Croatia faced defending champions Italy, who secured their progression to the knockout stages of Euro 2024.

The veteran midfielder had an eventful game, missing a penalty after Andrej Kramarić was fouled, but scoring from the rebound to secure the record.

Croatia were on the brink of progression to the next round with few seconds left before Riccardo Calafiori slipped a pass to Mattia Zaccagni who scored a beautiful goal.

The Real Madrid midfielder has now become the oldest ever goalscorer at the European Championship at 38 years and 289 days old, surpassing the previous record by Ivica Vastic at 38 years and 257 days.

However Modric may not hold the record for longer with Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe of Portugal who are older still in the competition and could score in their next match.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup finalists have two points and have a slim chance of making the next round, with three teams in third place in other groups already on three points.

Croats need England to beat Slovenia by at least three goals and Denmark to beat Serbia in Group C. They also need Czechia and Georgia losing to Turkiye and Portugal in Group
