Police are investigating the death of a 52-year-old passenger who died in a matatu along the Machakos-Koka route.
According to police, Peter Kioko Wambua was unresponsive when the conductor went to wake him up to inform him he had reached his destination.
Wambua had boarded the matatu in Machakos town headed to his rural home in Kamuani on Saturday May 25, 2024 evening.
He informed the conductor he would alight at his destination and paid his fare. He also asked the conductor to alert him when they arrived at Kamuani.
The conductor called to those intending to alight at Kamuani to do so, but Wambua did not respond.
The conductor tried to wake him up but found him unresponsive. He sought assistance from another passenger to help him alight from the vehicle, but realized he was dead.
The authorities describe that upon arrival at the the scene they found the body lying on the roadside.
Wambua’s family was immediately contacted and swiftly rushed to the scene, where they found their kin.
The body, has since been moved to Machakos Level Five Hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem analysis.
Reports from the family indicate Wambua was residing in Nairobi and had contacted his mother on Saturday morning requesting fare to come home since he was sick.
The cause of his illness is unclear, however two sachets of medicine were recovered from his shirt pocket
