A total of 38 schools across nine sub-counties in Machakos County have been earmarked for infrastructure improvements and teacher training to enhance inclusive education for children with disabilities.
ADDA’s Commitment to Inclusive Education
The initiative, led by the Agency for Disability and Development in Africa (ADDA), aims to foster collaboration among education stakeholders to ensure that children with disabilities receive equal learning opportunities.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting in Machakos, ADDA’s coordinator emphasized the need for stronger partnerships to advance inclusive education. The agency also called upon the government to launch a nationwide campaign advocating for equal access to quality education for children with disabilities.
Stakeholders Urged to Take Action
Asenia Kaburu, an ADDA officer, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to strengthening cooperation among education stakeholders.
“Our goal is to ensure that no child is excluded from the education system due to disability. We urge all stakeholders to play their part in making inclusive education a reality,” she said.
Representatives from the Ministry of Education, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), and other government agencies have been urged to identify and implement policies that promote inclusive learning environments.
Aligning with Broader Educational Goals
This initiative is in line with Kenya’s education equity agenda, which seeks to create an environment where all children regardless of physical or intellectual ability can thrive.
The upcoming infrastructure upgrades and specialized teacher training will help bridge the gap in education access for children with disabilities.
As efforts intensify, Machakos County is set to become a model for inclusive education in Kenya ensuring that no child is left behind.
