Machogu directs universities to admit students without fees

Education cabinet secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu on August 24, directed institutions of higher learning to admit all students placed by KUCCPS, pending processing of their funding.

In a press statement, Machogu explained that no student selected by KUCCPS should be denied admission in university for lack of school fees.

“Universities and colleges shall admit all students from the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education cohort as placed by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), pending the processing of their applications for funding,” Machogu stated.

The Education CS noted that the government was addressing challenges the students faced, relating to invalidated National Identification Cards and the Integrated Personnel Registration System (IPRS).

“Each university and college shall have in place a help desk to support first year students that may need assistance in relation to their funding applications,” the CS added.

On the other hand, most students had raised concern over the challenges experienced since the start of the application process, as the system would take longer time to accept their details.

Public universities and colleges commenced admission for the academic year 2023/2024 on different dates, ranging from August, 24 to September 25, 2023.

The new higher education funding model was unveiled by President William Ruto on May 3, at State House, Nairobi.

The new model allows funding of students basing on their family background, especially considering their levels of income.
