Azimio la Umoja coalition party spokesperson Makau Mutua has supported former Attorney General Githu Muigai’s proposal of reducing the number of elected leaders in Kenya.

In a statement posted on his X account on Friday, September 29, Mutua explained that this is the right time for Kenya to reduce the number of elective positions since Kenyans are overrepresented.

“Prof Githu Muigai is right. Kenyans are over-represented and overburdened by their representatives,” Mutua stated.

According to Mutua, the Senate should be abolished, and the number of Members of County Assembly (MCAs).

“Let’s abolish the Senate, shrink the National Assembly to under 200, amalgamate counties, and drastically cut the number of MCAs,” he stated.

Mutua’s remarks emerged after former Attorney General Githu Muigai on Thursday, September 28 suggested to the National Dialogue Committee that the number of constituencies should be reduced.

“We should actually reduce the number of constituencies to about 100, then abolish woman rep seat and create two more seats, one for men and one for women in every constituency,” Muigai stated.

Muigai explained that reducing the number of constituencies and counties will help the government save funds that go into salaries.

The former Attorney General told the committee that when the constitution was being drafted in 2004, Kenyans had suggested to have only 14 counties through public participation.

On the other hand, Kuria East MP Marwa Kitayama has tabled a bill in parliament to increase the number of counties from 47 to 52.

Kitayama had explained in his bill that increasing counties would be an advantage to minority communities in the country.
