Malala kicked out as Hassan Omar takes over as interim UDA Party Secretary General

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has officially dismissed Cleophas Malala from his role as Secretary General, appointing Vice Chairperson Hassan Omar as the interim successor.

“In the meantime, upon wide and consultative deliberations, and in compliance and in accordance with its mandate under Article 8.2 of the Party Constitution, the National Executive Committee has determined to designate the Vice-Chairperson, Hon. Hassan Omar Hassan to act as the Secretary General on interim basis,” a statement from the party reads in part.

This decision was reached during a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) on August 2, following a series of tumultuous events that have unsettled the party, including a recent chaotic incident at their headquarters.

“National Executive Committee was convened today through the request of the members of the Committee to discuss, deliberate and agree on the way forward based on the events of the last few days in the Party and fundamentally, the events of the last few weeks in our Country,” the statement added.

The NEC convened to address the pressing issues that have arisen within the party, particularly in light of the recent unrest. The meeting underscored the necessity for a strategic direction as the UDA moves forward with grassroots elections. The committee has urged the National Elections Board to make the necessary adjustments to facilitate these elections effectively.

“Resultantly, the Party will be implementing a raft of governing and administrative measures to accelerate its agenda and to set forth a distinctive path of inclusive, participative and consultative organisation,” continued the statement.

The ouster comes just two days after a section of UDA leaders convened an emergency meeting to address the recent division within the party.
