Malkia Strikers lose to Poland in straight sets at Paris Olympics

Malkia Strikers lost their second preliminary round match at the Paris Olympics, falling to Poland in straight sets (3-0) on Wednesday night. The two-time European champions won with scores of 25-14, 25-17, and 25-15, securing their second victory of the tournament. Despite the loss, Malkia Strikers displayed commendable bravery at various stages of the game.

Outside hitters Pamela Adhiambo and Veronica Adhiambo emerged as the top scorers for the Pool B match. The two combined for 27 points, though it wasn’t enough to secure Malkia Strikers’ first-ever win at the Games. Pamela, who was the second-best scorer in the first match against Brazil, led with 14 points (13 kills and one block), while Veronica contributed 11 kills and two blocks.

Coach Japheth Munala’s side started the game strongly, matching Poland point-for-point in the first set until the Poles pulled ahead to a 14-6 lead. A time-out called by Munala didn’t halt Poland’s momentum, as they extended their lead to 19-9 and eventually wrapped up the set in approximately 18 minutes.

The second set began similarly, with Malkia Strikers responding to each point scored by Poland until a 5-5 tie. However, Poland’s superiority soon became evident as they surged to a 12-6 lead, prompting another time-out from Munala. After the timeout, the Strikers rallied with the support of a vocal courtside crowd, adding 11 more points, but Poland still managed to secure the set.

In the final set, Poland started strongly, racing to a 7-1 lead before Munala called for another timeout to strategize. The Strikers responded positively, reducing the score to 8-6. Despite showing flashes of brilliance in their attacks, poor reception issues hindered the Kenyans.

Head coach Japheth Munala remains optimistic about their chances of securing a win. He has already set his sights on the upcoming match against Japan. “We’re improving in every match, and getting 17 points against Poland makes me start dreaming of our first-ever set win. We improved our attacking, but reception was not good this time. We will have to be good in all departments if we’re to get a win against Japan,” said Munala.

Kenya will play Japan in the final Pool match on Saturday at 2:00 PM East African Time.
