A distraught widow in Tartar village, West Pokot County, is seeking justice after his 20-year-old boy was allegedly killed by a man who is on the run.
The deceased Aaron Kisang Reng’etiang was reportedly hit by a blunt object after he had gone to meet his 17-year-old girlfriend.
Kisang died on 28th February while undergoing treatment at Kapenguria County Referral Hospital where he was admitted after the man allegedly assaulted him on 24th February within Karas village of Kapenguria.
Medical reports indicate that the deceased sustained a fracture of the skull and a bleeding in the brain as a result of being hit by the blunt object.
The 40-year-old widow and a mother of seven, Paulina Reng’etiang, says Kisang was the sole bread winner of the family.
The deceased who was waiting to join university was working as a boda boda rider. His killer is the brother to his girlfriend.
“On Saturday, I called my son who had gone to Makutano town and told me that he was coming but he didn’t come home. On Sunday I tried to call him but his phone was off. On my way to church, a health worker called me and told me to go to Keringet health center,” she says.
She alludes that she found her son at the local health center crying in excruciating pain.
“Reaching at the health center I found my son on the bed crying in pain. When he saw me he cried louder and told me that he had been beaten by Ruth’s brother. I took my son to Kapenguria County referral hospital, did X ray and I was told he had a fracture in the head,” she narrates.
Charles Kibor, an uncle to the deceased, says that justice has not been done.
“If we could have done the Pokot ritual, the family of the killer could not be there by now but we decided to follow the law. This family has many problems. The suspect has not been found,” he says.
“The father of the suspect came here on Monday. We told him to give out 50,000 to help for the burial; he gave out KSh20,000 and went mute. He does not pick calls. We had agreed with him to bring KSh200,000 by Monday,” he adds.
Mr Kibor explains that the killer’s family should do Kiring’at ritual to prevent destruction, burning of houses and cattle as compensation for the burial arrangements and after burial get the value of the person.
According to the police, Ruth told them her brother beat the deceased.
West Pokot Sub County Police Commander Kirui Kipkemoi says the girl and her mother were arrested and released on bond.
