Man, 48, kills 23-year-old wife over ‘denial of conjugal rights’

Police in West Nile Region, Northwestern Uganda, have arrested a 48-year-old man who allegedly killed his wife.

Aguna James, a peasant of Obaru cell on Ombokolo ward, is said to have murdered his 23-year-old wife Chandiru Judith on the night of March 1, 2024 over denial of conjugal rights.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the couple has been sharing their matrimonial bed but without engaging in sexual affairs after the deceased accused the husband of extra-marital affairs.

Police Spokesperson Fred Enaga says that during the fateful night, the suspect picked a quarrel with his wife, and she left the bed for him and slept down on another mattress.

“The angered husband followed and grabbed her, then hit her around the ribs. The victim fell down on the floor and succumbed to the injuries,” Enaga says.

After committing the crime, the suspect is said to have handed himself over to the police.

The scene was documented and the body of the victim examined, and handed over to the relatives for burial.

The police spokesperson has expressed his concerns over the rise in cases of gruesome murders in domestic setting. The murders reported are of spouses, especially women/wives by their husbands, over denial of conjugal rights and other extra-marital concerns.

“We should be reminded that every spouse, partner or lover has a right to life, which has to be respected instead of taking the law in one’s hands,” he adds.
