A man in his 50s from South Korea has admitted to killing his girlfriend and concealing her body in cement for 16 years.
The event took place in 2008, but the body remained hidden until recently when a maintenance worker uncovered the grizzly secret.
The man, identified only as Mr A by police, revealed that he fatally struck his girlfriend during an argument in their shared apartment in Geoje, a southern city.
After hitting her with a blunt object, Mr A placed her lifeless body into a suitcase.
He then buried the suitcase under bricks and cement on a third-floor balcony that could only be accessed from the bedroom.
For years, the body remained undiscovered, despite Mr A continuing to live in the apartment for another eight years.
His life took another turn in 2016 when he was arrested on unrelated drug charges, leaving the apartment vacant.
The landlord used the space for storage, unaware of the grim secret hidden on the balcony.
It wasn’t until last month, during routine maintenance work, that a worker stumbled upon the suitcase encased in cement.
Police were called, and through fingerprint analysis, the body was identified as the woman who had been missing for over a decade.
An autopsy confirmed she died from blunt force trauma to the head.
The woman, in her 30s at the time of her death, had not been reported missing by her family until three years after her disappearance.
The family had lost contact with her, and when they tried to find her in Geoje, they were told she had broken up with Mr A and left the area.
Mr. A, who was not living in the apartment when the body was found, was quickly located and arrested.
He confessed to the crime, admitting that the argument turned fatal and led to the tragic cover-up.
Police are continuing their investigation and plan to charge Mr A with murder, finally bringing closure to a mystery that had remained unsolved for 16 years.
