Man crowned Miss Portugal, two males set to compete in Miss Universe pageant

A male, Marina Machete, claimed the coveted title of Miss Portugal.

Making history as the country’s first trans woman to win this traditionally female honor.

On his Instagram, Machete expressed immense pride in breaking down barriers:

“I’m proud to be the first trans woman to compete for the title of Miss Universe Portugal.

For years, participation seemed impossible, but today, I stand proud among these amazing finalists.

Machete’s controversial win

The 28-year-old flight attendant will represent Portugal in the forthcoming Miss Universe competition in El Salvador on November 18, 2023.

However, not everyone greeted this milestone with open arms.

Portuguese Member of Parliament Rui Paulo Sousa from the right-wing Chega Party voiced his disapproval, stating,

“When I read this news, I initially thought it was a joke.

It is undoubtedly a sad day for those young women who dreamed about winning the female beauty pageant.”

Interestingly, this groundbreaking moment coincides with the Miss Universe organization’s acquisition by its transgender owner.

Anne Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip, who transitioned from male to female. Jakrajutatip, who also leads Thailand-based media company JKN Global Group Pcl, reflected on her journey.

“I became a billionaire at age 38, a woman at 39, and a mother of two at 40.

I believe in the power of women to transform into the best versions of themselves.”

Meanwhile, in Italy, the Miss Italy pageant took a different stance by prohibiting transgender contestants from participating.

In response, more than 100 men registered to enter the competition in protest of the new ban.

Miss Italy official Patrizia Mirigliani emphasized their divergence from what she deemed “absurd” trans activism, stating,

“Miss Italia will not jump on the glittery bandwagon.”

While also highlighting the ongoing debates surrounding the role of transgender individuals in beauty pageants across the globe.
