An unidentified middle-aged man was found dead in a lodging in Kangundo Town, Machakos County, on Saturday, March 1 morning, in what is suspected to be a case of suicide. The man, believed to be around 35 years old, reportedly used a mosquito net to take his own life.
According to Joseph Mutuku, the proprietor of the lodging, the man checked in on the evening of February 28, 2025. He requested to see the room first before providing his identification details. After confirming his stay, he asked for water to take a bath, promising to return to the counter with his ID, but he never did.
Mutuku noted that the man locked himself inside the room, raising suspicions among staff when he failed to reappear. The bartenders grew concerned but waited until morning. When repeated knocks on the door went unanswered, they alerted local Nyumba Kumi elders.
Munguti Mbithi, a Nyumba Kumi representative, stated that he was called at around 9:00 a.m. and, upon arrival, confirmed that the man had taken his own life. “He appeared to be a young man, and from what we can tell, drug and substance abuse could be a contributing factor,” Mbithi remarked.
Residents gathered at the scene, with Bernard Kioko urging young people to seek better ways to deal with their challenges instead of resorting to suicide. He also expressed concern over the rising cases of drug abuse in Kangundo, warning that it was affecting the youth negatively.
Officers from Kangundo Police Station arrived at the scene and moved the body to Kangundo Hospital mortuary. Investigations are ongoing to establish the man’s identity, as he had no identification documents on him.
Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the deceased to come forward as they continue their probe into the tragic incident.
