Man sentenced to 5 years in jail for raising false terror attack alarm to Interpol to punish wife

Moses Kabali, a Ugandan man, has been sentenced to five years in prison by the Kahawa Chief Magistrate Court. He was found guilty of making a false claim under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

On June 30, 2024, Kabali sent an email to Interpol in France. In the email, he warned about a supposed terrorist attack in Kenya by a known terrorist group. He claimed that two people he knew were planning to use bombs for this attack.

The Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) started an investigation. They arrested a woman mentioned in Kabali’s email. She said the phone number linked to the report was hers, but her cousin was using it.

The police then looked for her cousin and arrested her in Eastleigh on August 31, 2024. However, she had no ties to any terrorist group and knew nothing about any planned attack.

To solve the case, Kabali was arrested on September 3, 2024, at a school in Eastleigh. Police searched his home and found two mobile phones, two laptops, and several documents. A forensic analysis showed that Kabali sent the email from his Yahoo account.

It turned out Kabali sent the fake email to get back at his wife after they separated.

He was appeared before Magistrate Gideon Kiage, who sentenced him to pay a fine of KSh5,000,000 or serve five years in prison if he could not pay.
