A court in Lusaka,Zambia has sentenced Bright Munyepa to nine months in prison with hard labour after he brutally attacked his wife, Precious Musapa, for speaking to another man.
The magistrate, Mutinta Mwenya, handed down the sentence, emphasizing the court’s duty to curb rising gender-based violence (GBV) cases in the city.
The violent incident occurred when Musapa left home to conduct business in the Muchelekelo farm area.
While carrying her baby on her back, she was greeted by an unidentified man on the way.
The interaction was brief, and they parted ways immediately.
However, Munyepa, who had been secretly following her, was enraged by the exchange.
He confronted his wife, demanding to know who the man was.
Musapa, unaware of any wrongdoing, explained that she did not know the stranger.
Her response did not satisfy Munyepa, who later brought up the issue again that night.
When his wife maintained her innocence, his anger turned into violence.
Grabbing a hoe handle, Munyepa struck his wife with such force that he broke her left arm.
She also suffered severe body pains and a fractured ulnar. Despite her injuries, she reported the assault to the police the following morning.
In court, Munyepa attempted to downplay the attack, insisting that he used a stick rather than a hoe handle.
However, medical reports confirmed the extent of his wife’s injuries, supporting the prosecution’s case.
As he pleaded for leniency, Munyepa told the court that he was the breadwinner of his family.
But Magistrate Mwenya remained firm, stating that the rising cases of GBV in Lusaka demanded strict action.
“Gender-based violence is on the rise.
The court has a duty to curtail this vice and bring sanity,” the magistrate declared before handing down the sentence.
Munyepa will now spend the next nine months behind bars, reflecting on the harm he inflicted on the woman he was supposed to protect.
