A man was caught attempting to smuggle more than 100 live snakes in his pants at a travel checkpoint.
The bizarre episode occurred at Futian Port, where customs officials intercepted the man as he tried to enter Shenzhen, China from Hong Kong.
When the man was stopped, officials discovered six drawstring bags “sealed with tape” stuffed in his pockets.
Upon inspection, each bag was found to contain living snakes of various shapes, sizes, and colours.
The customs officials were astounded to find a total of 104 snakes inside the man’s clothing.
The types of snakes included the milk snake, western hognose snake, corn snake, Texas rat snake, and bullsnake.
These species, while diverse, all shared a common fate of being stuffed into drawstring bags for an attempted smuggling operation.
A statement from China customs shared on Tuesday, July 9, highlighted the gravity of the situation. “Once opened, each bag was found to contain living snakes in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and colours.
After counting, a total of 104 snakes were found.”
The customs agency emphasized that those who break the rules will be held accountable according to the law. However, it remains unclear if the man was arrested following the incident.
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s official website notes that both federal and state governments impose restrictions on transporting live animals.
Each airline also has its policies regarding the handling of animals they transport.
These regulations are in place to ensure the safety and welfare of both the animals and passengers.
