Jeffrey Bell Jr., a 51-year-old man, allegedly went to extreme lengths to escape his financial obligations.
Faking his own death to avoid paying child support.
But his elaborate deception unraveled when police found him alive and well at his girlfriend’s house, just miles from where he was supposed to be.
Indiana State Police revealed in a Facebook statement that Bell falsely reported his death in April 2024.
Claiming he could no longer make the substantial child support payments he owed.
However, his story quickly fell apart when a state police detective visited his girlfriend’s home to investigate the suspicious emails reporting his demise.
Instead of a grieving household, the detective found Jeffrey very much alive.
Even when confronted, Bell reportedly refused to admit his identity, denying he was Jeffrey Bell.
But once positively identified, he was given a court date for Jan. 23 at Washington County Circuit Court.
In yet another attempt to deceive authorities, Bell allegedly insisted he was out of state and would attend the hearing via video call.
Investigators, however, suspected otherwise.
Authorities soon confirmed their suspicions.
Washington County Sheriff’s deputies visited the same house where Bell had initially been found, and new evidence proved he was still inside.
Upon learning the truth, Judge Larry Medlock immediately ordered Bell’s arrest and had him transported straight to the courtroom.
Bell now faces multiple charges, including false informing, and has been booked into Washington County Jail with a $100,000 bond.
He was also charged with three counts of failure to appear in court—one carrying a $500 bond and two without bond.
For now, Bell remains behind bars.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 6 for a contempt hearing, with a jury trial on the false informing charge set for May 13.
