Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have exposed a bizarre extortion scheme after rescuing a 25-year-old man who staged his own kidnapping in Kitengela, Kajiado County.
Nobert Mulwo reportedly tied himself up, inflicted cuts on his body, and demanded Ksh100,000 from his sister as ransom. According to authorities, Mulwo orchestrated the plan after losing his entire November salary to gambling.
Staged Abduction and “Rescue”
The incident unfolded after Mulwo’s sister reported to the police that he had been allegedly abducted by two men in a Toyota Probox. The DCI Crime Research and Operations Directorate swiftly traced the victim to Mutuku Lodgings in Kitengela, where he was found bound with ropes and gagged with a bloody bandage.
During initial interrogation, detectives discovered that Mulwo’s wounds were self-inflicted to make the staged kidnapping appear authentic and pressure his family into paying the ransom.
Evidence Recovered
Recovered at the scene were:
- Ksh10,100 in cash,
- A mobile phone used to communicate with his family,
- A scalpel blade and bandages used to create fake injuries.
An accomplice, only identified as Ndolo, is also believed to have been part of the scheme but remains at large.
Legal Action
Mulwo has been handed over to DCI Kajiado for further investigations and subsequent arraignment in court.
The incident highlights the lengths some individuals go to under financial pressure and raises concerns about the societal impact of betting. Authorities continue to warn against illegal and deceptive activities, urging individuals to seek lawful solutions to financial difficulties.
